Homeowners fail to see the benefits of home improvement - 5th January 2007

Many homeowners do not appreciate how much home improvements can add to the value of their home, a home improvement expert has claimed.

Technical consultant to the National Home Improvement Council, Andrew Leech, said that people should be considering energy efficiency improvement in particular when looking to maximise their home's value.

While changing a tap washer wouldn't add to the value of a house in this day and age, with energy efficiency such a major subject, homeowners should definitely be looking at this area, Mr Leech said.

He also said that new legislation next year would mean that those selling a house would have to prove that their property was up to standard when it came to energy efficiency and insulation.

Sellers whose houses were not up to par would find it more difficult to sell their property than if they had done some DIY to improve it, he said.

Home improvements are one of the most popular reasons for taking out a personal loan.
